The Barry Universitys Nursing Students Association participated in the annual American Cancer Societys community event – Relay for Life. It offers everyone in the community a chance to participate in the fight against cancer. This event was held on March 31tst to April 1st at Barry University. Thirty two nursing students participated in the event and raised $1800.

The preparations for the project started in January 2006. Sophomore student Deena Dooley was elected as the team captain to represent the nursing students on the Relay for Life committee. The nursing students were involved in attending weekly meetings with the committee. The NSA promoted the event at their meetings, at the School of Nursings faculty meetings, during classroom sessions and through distribution of flyers. A webpage was created by the NSA on the Relay for Life website. Membership for the team and donations were generated through online campaigning. The NSAs goal was to raise $1000 and recruit ten members. They surpassed this goal by recruiting 32 members and raising $1800.
The theme of the event was Countries around the world and twenty teams participated. The NSA selected to represent the country of France. Fundraising activities at the event included sale of luminaries, wheelchair rides and food sales. Overall the American Cancer Society raised $75,000 in the fight against cancer. For participation in the Relay for Life the NSA received the award for the Most Spirited Team from the American Cancer Society.
